A Patient-Centered Philosophy
Care built around where you want to go.
Every treatment decision begins with the diagnosis, but it is guided by the person—their symptoms, priorities, health, and goals for life beyond pain.
Understand What Was Lost
Recognize how pain and limited mobility have changed work, sleep, independence, confidence, and everyday life.
Build the Right Path
Explain the diagnosis clearly and choose purposeful nonsurgical or surgical care tailored to the individual.
Measure Meaningful Recovery
Define progress by less pain, better movement, and a return to the activities that make life feel whole.
Why The Athletic Spine?
The loss of movement changed my life.
Before I became a spine surgeon, I was a Division I soccer player at UC Berkeley and captain of a team that rose to No. 1 in the nation.
Near the end of my playing career, a devastating Lisfranc injury ended my competitive soccer career. I went from performing at the highest level of collegiate athletics to losing the freedom to move without pain. I experienced firsthand both the physical limitations and the emotional toll that can come with lost mobility—including the effects on identity, independence, confidence, and the way you imagine your future.
Regaining mobility required patience, discipline, and a willingness to keep fighting through setbacks. That experience ultimately led me toward orthopedic surgery and continues to shape how I care for patients today. When pain has taken movement away, I am committed to helping each patient understand the problem, find the right path forward, and work toward recovery and a more active life.
